The article discusses the history of Muslims in India from the advent of Islam to the subcontinent up to the present time. The work provides a brief historical background on the history of Islamic states on the territory of modern India and Pakistan, such as the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Empire and others. The contribution of Muslims to the Indian independence movement from British colonial rule, the partition of India along religious lines and the aftermath of such partition are also discussed. Much attention is paid to intercultural and interreligious conflict between Muslims and Hindus, the issue of persecution of Muslims at the state level, acts of violence against the Muslim population and segregation.
