The article examines the impact of the SMO in Ukraine on
relations between Iran and Russia. Tehran expressed its understanding when
Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine. Iran's position can be
explained by the fact that Ukraine is not an immediate neighbor of Iran, and
economic relations between the two states are rather weak, while the Iranian
authorities consider Russia a strategic partner. Russia and Iran cooperate in
the energy, military and trade spheres. The development of relations between
Iran and Russia is of particular importance due to the international sanctions
imposed on both states.
